Swiss technology group ABB has received a $225 million order from Core Energy and Erika Energy to provide general contracting services for two photovoltaic power plants in the northern province of Limpopo, South Africa. Erika Energy's portion is owned by SunEdison Corporation.

Witkop and Soutpan solar power stations will be built near the capital of Limpopo Province, Poirot, with installed capacities of 33MW and 31MW respectively.

As part of the ABB contract, the company will be responsible for the design, engineering, installation, and commissioning of these two projects. It will also provide a range of products and technologies, including inverters, protective equipment, switchgear, dry-type transformers, controllers, and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.

These two factories are expected to be completed in 2013, with a total annual production capacity of 130 GWh. This electricity will be transmitted to the high-voltage transmission grid through ABB's newly established high-voltage substation.

According to the company, under Phase 1 of the South African government's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Purchase (REIPPP) program, this solar power station will be the first utility scale photovoltaic project to be built. REIPPP seeks to diversify South Africa's energy mix by encouraging independent power producers to develop the country's renewable energy resources.

Pashupathy Gopalan, Vice President and Managing Director of Southeast Asia and Sub Saharan Africa at SunEdison, said, "We have a strong partnership with ABB and are delighted to be working with them on this project. ABB has extensive experience and expertise, and we are delighted to be partnering with them to bring renewable energy to South Africa
