The ABB TU846 is a high-reliability Module Termination Unit (MTU) engineered as a core component of the ABB S800 I/O system . This specific model is designed to serve as a passive mounting and connection base for the redundant configuration of field communication interfaces, specifically the CI840 or CI840A modules, and for redundant I/O . The ABB TU846 provides the fundamental infrastructure for power distribution, dual PROFIBUS communication links, and ModuleBus connections, enabling the creation of highly available, fault-tolerant distributed control systems (DCS) . Its 1oo2 redundant architecture ensures that in the event of a primary communication path failure, the system instantaneously switches to the backup, guaranteeing uninterrupted process control in critical industrial applications .

Operation Steps:

Proper handling of the ABB TU846 during operation is essential for system integrity. Follow these steps for integration and setup:

Pre-Installation Verification: Before handling the unit, ensure all power sources are disconnected. Verify that the ABB TU846 matches your system requirements (redundant CI840/CI840A configuration) and that you have the correct I/O modules for the application.

Physical Mounting: Mount the model onto a standard DIN rail using the integrated latching device, which also provides grounding . Ensure adequate space to the left of the unit for removal, as the ABB TU846 cannot be replaced with power applied .

Electrical and Communication Connections: Connect the 24 V DC redundant power supply to the designated terminals . Connect the two PROFIBUS DP cables for redundant communication . Configure the station address (0-99) using the two rotary switches on the unit .

Mechanical Keying and Module Insertion: Before installing I/O or communication modules, configure the four mechanical keys (two for each position) using a screwdriver to match the intended module types, preventing incorrect insertion . Install the CI840/CI840A modules and any redundant I/O modules onto the ABB TU846.

Power-On and Verification: Restore power to the system. Observe the six bi-color LED status indicators on the model to verify normal operation and communication .

Installation Precautions:

Adhering to these precautions will safeguard both the operator and the equipment when handling this model:

ESD Safety: The ABB TU846 hosts sensitive electronic components. Always wear a grounded anti-static wrist strap when handling the unit and installing modules to prevent electrostatic discharge damage.

Power Disconnection: The ABB TU846 does not support hot-swapping and cannot be replaced with power applied . Always disconnect power before installing or removing the unit itself.

System Compatibility: Before installation, confirm that the model's configuration keys are set correctly for the intended CI840/CI840A and I/O modules to avoid hardware damage .

Environmental Control: Install this model in a cabinet with at least IP20 protection . Ensure the location is clean, dry, and within the specified operating temperature range of -25°C to +60°C .

Grounding: Ensure the DIN rail is properly grounded according to IEC 61000-4-5 standards (ground resistance < 1Ω) to maintain system integrity and safety .

Cable Routing: Route communication and power cables separately from high-voltage wiring to avoid electromagnetic interference, and observe the maximum ModuleBus length of 2.5 meters .

Daily Maintenance:

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and reliability of the ABB TU846:

Periodic Inspection: Annually, inspect the model for any signs of dust accumulation, loose connections, or corrosion. Use clean, dry compressed air to remove debris from the unit's surfaces and ventilation areas .

Diagnostic Monitoring: Regularly observe the LED status indicators on the ABB TU846 during routine walks. If a red fault LED appears, use diagnostic tools to identify and resolve the issue promptly .

Connection Tightness: During scheduled system downtime, verify that all field wiring connections to the model are secure, as thermal cycling and vibration can cause loosening over time. Use a torque of 0.5-0.6 Nm for terminal screws .

Redundancy Testing: Periodically test the redundancy functionality by simulating a primary communication path failure to ensure automatic switchover to the backup path occurs within specified parameters (e.g.,<10ms) .

Cable Inspection: For long-term system operation, consider replacing communication cables every 3 years to ensure optimal signal integrity and data transmission stability .
